In Memoriam

Maddie was a transgender woman, Korean adoptee, and father of two young children. Maddie preferred to be referred to as “them,” “their,” and “they”.

Maddi, was shot and killed by the police during a well-being check at their home. Maddie was experiencing a mental health crisis and had been struggling with mental health issues for a while. Instead of giving Maddie the help or support they needed, police fatally shot Maddie three times.

Their sister (Emily) reached out to us in 2019. But at that time, Maddie was mentally not ready to face fellow YangJu Orphanage members.

The months before his fatal death have been extremely difficult. They had come out as transgender in spring 2020 but because of Covid, face-to-face communication with the family was minimal until the time of their death. They had very horrible memories from the YangJu Orphanage they were only able to process by intensive therapy. They had blocked them out for so long, and it was probably a survival mechanism. They struggled severely with their mental health in the past few years as they had uncovered so much about their adoption.
